"The process of drawing directly from nature in oil pastels is like making calligraphy in ink with a brush. The gestures expressed in these moments require full concentration and focus. Both materials, ink and oil pastels, leave permanent marks on the paper and are unforgiving. Corrections cannot be made or covered up. Like a photographer, I try to capture particular moments in time where light and movement are instilled on paper. This is a Zen-like experience for me where I become one with nature. In each oil pastel I remember the walk, the place I sat and laid down my pastels and what I was feeling at that time. They are like precious jewels to me; complete body, mind and soul. My oil pastels are memories captured on paper."
